Malaysia: Three fined over prostitution

Kuala Lumpur - Three Muslim women who was caught for "attempted prostitution" during fasting month were fined RM4,500 each by the Syariah High Court.

They are Anisah Kindaran, 22; Hasmah Sulaiman, 20 and Rohaya Awaljan, 31 who admitted to their respective charges yesterday.

Another woman, Bahria Beddu Haying, 23, who was caught while she was clad in her brassiere and trying to wear her trousers, was fined RM4,900 after pleaded guilty to prostitution.

The women, who were clad in a pair of jeans or skirts and T-shirts, were each provided with a robe, to attend the court proceedings earlier.

An Indonesian, Sukandi Mohsin, 30, was fined RM2,900 after he admitted to committing khalwat. They paid their fines.

According to a statement of facts, a team of religious enforcement officials conducted an anti-vice operation around Petaling Street/ Jalan Petaling here at noon on Wednesday and detained them.

Upon inspection at unnumbered premise there, they found Hasmah and Anisah who were then waiting for their clients in front of respective rooms.

In front of another room, they found Rohaya. Inside another room, they found Bahria with a Myanmar refugee Thang Kew Mung.

The court was told yesterday that the officials knocked a room there and found Sukandi with Indonesian Agustina Pama'tan. He was caught for being in the same room with her without a family or marital relationship.

In mitigation, all of them pleaded before Syariah Judge Mohamad Shakir Abdul Hamid for leniency.

Prosecuting officer Mohd Yusof Sulaiman pressed for deterrent sentence saying that the offences were serious.

He asked the court to impose a sentence that could serve as a lesson for them.
