Thai minister orders investigation of porn broacasts

October 5, 2005

The Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office has ordered the Public Relations Department to investigate the problem of pornography having been televised through Channel 11. Meanwhile, state officials are suspected of having been involved in this matter.

Mr Suranand Vejjajiva, of the Prime Minister's Office, spoke about the case stating that people in Chiang Rai Province have reported finding pornography being broadcast via Channel 11. Mr Suranand said he has ordered Mr Kanop Ketuchart, his personal secretary, to coordinate and jointly investigate the matter with the Public Relations Department.

Mr Suranand said that he was initially told the questionable broadcasts had been caused by interference from another airwave that could have been cable TV or local TV, however this seems unlikely.

He noted that the investigation must be conducted quickly as the broadcast of pornography is against the law. He also noted that he is curious whether or not state officials played a part in this and has called for detailed investigation.

The Minister said that so far, similiar complaints have been reported, and from now on, he would have to ask the National Broadcasting Commission to establish standards in reporting and tracking such complaints.
