Yangon - Myanmar is stepping up its fight against human trafficking by finalizing the draft of a new law on prevention against human trafficking, Thursday's state-run newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported.

Done in accordance with the UN Convention Against TransnationalOrganized Crimes, the draft is being scrutinized by the Attorney General's Office, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Myanmar in April 2004 enacted the Mutual Assistance in CriminalMatters Law to serve as a legal basis for the country's international cooperation in crime suppression including human trafficking.

Meanwhile, Myanmar is strengthening its cooperation with the international community in the field by signing a number of international and bilateral documents and hosting regional meetingin the field.

Recently, the Myanmar government has criticized the annual report of the State Department of the United States on the situation of trafficking in persons in selected countries including Myanmar, blaming the US for the ignorance of the effortsmade by the country in eradicating the problem of human trafficking and the progress achieved so far.
