Taiwanese men charged with assault, rape of Vietnamese women
May 18, 2005
A father and son running a recruitment agency in Taiwan have been arrested on
charges of rape and sexual assault of at least 20 Vietnamese women seeking work
as maids.
The two men allegedly assaulted the women while claiming to conduct "physical
examinations".
The men face up to 10 years' jail if found guilty.
The two are also accused of having forced the women to sign documents stating
that they were not sexually harassed during their stay in Taiwan.
One of their victims was allegedly paid US$2,000 to remain silent.
Taiwan employs around 31,000 foreign workers, mainly in construction,
manufacturing, shipping and as domestic maids.
Most come from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
The government suspended the recruitment of Vietnamese workers in January,
after many ran away from their jobs and disappeared.
