A conversation with Playboy model Kay Sivilay

Hong Kong - Some publications try in vain to garner interviews from Playboy
models like Kay Sivilay, but for Asian Sex Gazette we arrived at the
opportunity through dumb luck and a professional mishap. Now journalistically
it is not something to be proud of - we erred in a June 21, 2004 article citing
incorrect information about her Playboy photographer - information we gleaned
from various internet sources and wire services.
The vigilant and internet savvy Sivilay appropriately called us out late last
year and told us the information was incorrect. We duly apologized to her and
now to you our readers for the faulty details. It is a testament to the times
and the medium of the internet that one cannot always trust the information
found online, even if sourced from multiple sites.
Not one to miss out on an opportunity - how often do you get emailed by Playboy
models? - we seized upon the opportunity and asked if she could help set the
record straight for ASG's readers, Kay graciously accepted. What we found
through our subsequent conversations was a refreshing and pleasant personality
that was a cut above your average model.
Kay proves to be an open-minded person who is always eager to learn new things
and describes herself as a balanced person. "The most important things in my
life is without a doubt my family and friends who support me," she told ASG. "I
love cooking and I love eating, working out, going out with friends to
nightclubs, playing with my Shiba Inu puppy, and spending time with my family."
Sivilay was born in Thailand but immigrated to the US at a very young age. We
discussed her cultural heritage, her connection to it and how being an
Asian-American has affected her perspective. As to religion, "I was born a
Buddhist, but our parents gave us the choice to choose our [own] spirituality,
which I deeply respect." Kay says she is spiritual but does not think one has
to go to church to prove it.
"Growing up with Asian influences definately taught me to respect others,
especially elders," Kay says. "It taught me not to be judgemental and to give
everyone the benefit of the doubt."
Asian influence aside Kay has become very connected to her new homeland, "I am
very much so an American girl," Kay admits. Though she does not speak Thai, she
understands a fair bit of it, especially her mother's distinctly Northestern
Thai/Lao dialect that she still uses in the home.
Playboy magazine is a sort of pinnacle in the world of men's magazines and for
the models that grace their pages. In this way the women that are chosen to be
in the magazine become icons not only for their beauty but often for their
exotic culture also. "I really believe Playboy should feature more asian models
because Asian women are beautiful. I have never met a man who didn't think
Asian women were beautiful!" Kay asserts, noting that Asian women have at times
been somewhat under represented in mainstream media.
"I think its great that we are starting to see Asian women in the media. Asian
women are not only beautiful, but many of them are incredibly brilliant and
smart. A good example is news reporter Lisa Ling," Sivilay said. Ling recently
left her popular spot on 'The View' and saddened many of her loyal
viewers, including Kay, who added that, "she left 'The View' to follow
her heart and went to MSNBC," to pursue her career.
Kay, like many others, feels that Asian men are underrepresented in media. "I'd
like to see more Asian men in the media. Sadly, I do think Asian men are
stereotyped, but I think this barrier will be broken down soon."
Sivilay says that she personally woould never do any type of hardcore
pornography, and that the nude modeling she did for Playboy represents a phase
for her. "I wanted to have something to say when I'm older, this is what I
looked like in my younger years."
Kay has a few more modeling committments in the months to come but ultimately
she says her short career in modeling for Playboy is over. She has acheived her
goals and looks forward to moving on to new and challengng endeavors and
spending more time with her best friend, her husband.
Kay Sivilay is a wonderful person to speak with, a beautiful model to behold
and truly a wonderful person. After the tsunami that tragically struck struck
her distant home land, Kay gave selfless to ease the burden of those affected
by the disaster and encourages other to do so also.
Asian Sex Gazette thanks Kay Sivilay for taking time to talk with us. Like her
many fans we wish her all the best of in all of her future endeavors.
