Brothel-cum-pub that operated from condo unit
January 21, 2005
Kuala Lumpur - Police have uncovered a brothel-cum-pub which operated from a
condominium unit in Taman Overseas Union Garden residences. Four Chinese
nationals believed to be sex workers have also been picked up in the process.
Brickfields deputy OCPD Supt Arjunaidi Mohamad said that after getting a
tip-off, a police team from the district headquarters raided the unit on the
fifth floor of the condominium at 7pm on Wednesday.
“As the door was locked, we had to force it open. We found the women in the
rooms and in the hall,” he said.
Initial investigations revealed that the women, aged between 20 and 31, were
involved in prostitution. Police also seized several packets of condoms from
them.
“The police team also recovered crates of beer and some liquor from the
premises during the raid.
“From the items seized and after we interviewed the women, we found that the
unit had been converted into a brothel-cum-pub for at least several months,” he
said.
He said follow-up investigations revealed that the brothel-cum-pub only
entertained “exclusive customers”, adding that the women had been working there
for a month.
“We are still tracking down the syndicate leader or the owner of the unit whom
we believe had tricked the women into prostitution,” Supt Arjunaidi told a
press conference at the district police headquarters here yesterday.
He said the women told police that the syndicate promised them jobs in
factories and companies.
Supt Arjunaidi said that last week, four more Chinese national women were
rescued with the public's help.
The women were brought to the district police headquarters and were later sent
to the Immigration Department.
In an unrelated case, a 28-year-old illegal DVD and VCD distributor was
detained when police seized from him about 1,000 copies of pornographic and
pirated copies worth an estimated RM20,000.
