Thai man jailed and caned for prostitution

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 33-year-old Thai man was jailed for one year and six months with three strokes of the cane for having lived in part off the earnings of three Thai prostitutes, before the Bandar Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Danupol Vrushladi admitted to having knowingly lived in part off the earnings of the prostitution of a 17-year-old Thai girl and similarly of 25-year-old Ussanee Bunphai.

Both prostitutes were each jailed six months with one stroke of the cane.

Meanwhile, he had also pleaded guilty to a charge of having lived in part off the earnings of another Thai woman aged 25 who had denied a charge of soliciting for the purpose of prostitution.

The 25-year-old alleged prostitute will be brought before the court again for trial on January 13, 2005.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Suriana Radin yesterday in her description to the court regarding the arrest of the Thai nationals said that the police from the Gadong Headquarters Anti-Vice Unit raided a hotel in the capital on December 22, acting upon a tip-off.

Personnel managed to detain the agent later identified as Danupol in a car with a 25-year-old Thai female country, who denied the charge of prostitution.

Meanwhile, the 17-year-old girl was found naked in a room at the hotel with a client and Ussanee Bunphai was also found unclothed in a different room with a client.

Police found used condoms in both rooms among other evidence was collected.

During investigations, Danupol admitted that he would be collecting 30 per cent of earnings from the prostitutes.

The 17-year-old prostitute admitted that she would charge B$70 per sexual intercourse. She has had 10 male clients ever since her arrival in the country.

Ussanee told the police that she would charge about B$50 to $70 per sexual intercourse. He has had 20 male clients ever since her arrival in the country.

Both girls came to the country earlier this month on social visit passes while Danupol worked as a chef at a local Thai restaurant.
