Catching the couriers in Malaysia

The authorities are keeping an eye on visitors from two Asian countries to check the smuggling of sex enhancement pills into the country.

It has been found that imitation Viagra is making its way here in the hand luggage of these travellers since last year, said Health Ministry pharmacy services department director Datuk Che Mohd Zin Che Awang.

“The main source seems to be through visitors from these countries who carry them in their hand luggage. Imagine if 10 visitors bring in 100 tablets, we can expect 1,000 of these sex stimulants in the market.”

He said other pills are brought in by courier service.

“We had intercepted these consignments,” he said.

“These countries are noted for manufacturing such imitation pharmaceutical products and the department had conducted spot checks to stem the flow.”

Mohd Zin was responding to our front-page report yesterday on Negri Sembilan Health Department officials going undercover to book operators of private clinics and pharmacies selling ‘sex booster’ capsules.

The department started monitoring these outlets because the capsules are known to have a negative impact on users.

It had also seized several types of the so-called ‘king of sex’ capsules from shops in Port Dickson and Lenggeng in the State.

They included Enjoy capsules, V-stone, Abang Boleh and fake Viagra.

Mohd Zin said since the department’s exercise to seize unregistered drugs, including traditional medicine and health supplements early this year following public complaints, RM17 million worth of such products were confiscated until May.

He said operations were conducted in states like Selangor, Kelantan, Perak, Kedah, Sabah and Sarawak.

“Of the RM17 million worth of products seized, RM10 million came from Selangor.”

Asked about the sex booster capsules discovered in Negri Sembilan, Mohd Zin said: “They have not been tested by us so we don’t really know the contents of these products. In the past, these products from a particular country claimed to contain 500mg of Viagra, while the original product only contained a maximum of 100mg.”

Asked how confident his department was in curbing fake products from the market, he said they are certain with the co-operation of the public.

“We appreciate the co-operation we received from members of the public who give us information on fake products.”
