A judge who issued an arrest warrant for actor Richard Gere and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty after their public kiss has reportedly been moved from his job. Dinesh Gupta has been transferred with immediate effect.

The kiss that caused a stormHe was moved from the northwestern city of Jaipur to the small town of Kishangarh, the Times of India said.

Although the transfer was "routine", the order is said to have come from a senior figure, Rajasthan Chief Justice Sachidanand Jha.

Judge Gupta took action after a local resident complained the kiss at an Aids awareness event was obscene.

Hollywood actor Gere, 57, had wrapped the Big Brother winner in his arms and kissed her several times on her cheeks.

After viewing footage of the event, the judge called the embrace and kiss "highly sexually erotic".

It was not immediately clear what effect the transfer would have on the arrest warrant.

Under Indian law, a person convicted of public obscenity faces up to three months in prison, a fine, or both.

The judge's ruling drew harsh criticism in India, with legal experts saying it had no legal merit and made the country look ridiculous.
