India: Jharkhand girls defy odds and law, get married

July 29, 2005

Ranchi - Gaining ground for gay rights in India, two young women in a Jharkhand village defied society and law to get married in a ceremony approved and arranged for by their family members.

Schoolmates Nitima Biruwa and Laxmi Bari got married last week in Bharbaria village of West Singhbhum district, 160 km from here, said local media reports.

The relationship blossomed when Laxmi came to stay in Nitima's home. Though most of her family said they were too poor to support Laxmi as well, Nitima's brother Birsa took up their cause and was instrumental in getting them married.

He discussed the matter with his mother and other villagers before doing so, reports said.

Birsa was quoted as saying that he did so because requests to his sister to keep away from Laxmi had not worked and he then decided not to be a villain. "I decided to ensure that they live together for life after getting society's consent so they don't face any problems in future."
