Child prostitution thrives in Peshawar

July 13, 2005

Peshawar - Children continue to serve as prostitutes in Pakistan's Peshawar city despite raids and a strict vigil by the police.

Deputy superintendent of police (City) Chaudhry Ashraf said patrolling and the recent arrest of 26 people in raids on hotels had failed to root out child prostitution, Dawn reported.

Ashraf said since the police couldn't catch the arrested men red-handed, it could not book them under clauses relevant to prostitution. A court released the suspects.

"Unless the suspects are caught red-handed, they cannot be charged under section 377 of the Pakistan Penal Code relating to unnatural offences," he said.

Ashraf said small hotels often do not register the addresses of guests. "This probably leads to an increase in child sex abuse," he said.

The police last week asked the owners of small hotels to start registering the addresses of guests before providing them rooms.

Several residents accused the managements of some schools of forcing students into prostitution. Others alleged that video arcades in the Yakatoot area supplied prostitutes.
