Honor killing: Pakistani kills sister
May 24, 2005
Multan - A man attacked his newly wed sister with a dagger and brutally killed
her for choosing a husband without seeking the family's consent, police in
eastern Pakistan said Tuesday.
The killing occurred late Monday in Kabirwala, a town in eastern Punjab
province, local police official Rana Iftikhar said. He said the 20-year-old
woman's brother had been arrested and will face a murder charge. The maximum
penalty for murder is death by hanging.
"It was a horrible crime. He cut body parts of his sister after killing her
with a dagger," he said.
Iftikhar said the victim was a college student and married last week.
She was tracked down by her brother on Sunday, he said.
"She was alone at the time, and her brother took her to the family's home after
promising that she would be forgiven and allowed to live with her husband," he
said.
He said police officers were investigating whether any other family members
were involved in the crime. "We are also trying to trace her husband," he said.
Violence against women, including honor killings, is common in many parts of
Pakistan, where human rights activists say hundreds of people are killed each
year for having affairs or marrying without consent.
