Court orders Chinese women out of Afghanistan for prostitution
By Habib Rahman Ibrahimi
May 5, 2005
Kabul - A lower court here on Wednesday ordered five Chinese women out of
Afghanistan for running a pub in the garb of a restaurant in this capital city.
Also convicted of promoting prostitution, the women have already spent three
months in detention - a period the court considered part of their jail term.
Each of six Afghans drinking at the Robi Restaurant was sentenced to six months
in jail.
The restaurant has already been closed down in a citywide police crackdown on
illegal guesthouses, mostly run by foreigners. Several restaurants have been
shut in the wake of the police action.
Judge Khalil Rahman Mohmand told Pajhwok Afghan News the convicted Chinese
women, having served their jail term, must leave the country immediately. Under
judicial laws, the women can appeal the verdict in higher courts.
Abdul Jabar Sabit, who headed the swoop, informed this scribe they had shut 11
'brothels and bars' run and registered in the guise of guesthouse. He said the
action was still going on.
The crackdown on restaurants and guesthouses was initiated by the Interior
Ministry after a spate of complains from Kabul residents.
