India probes law abuse in flesh trade: NHRC
January 19, 2005
New Delhi - The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Tuesday directed Delhi
Police Commissioner K.K. Paul to inquire into an NGO's allegation about abuse
of laws in the trafficking of women.
The complainant, the International Law Affiliates, had petitioned NHRC and
forwarded a copy of a news report on the plight of poor girls in Nepal and
India forced into prostitution.
"The article makes reference to the collusion between pimps, brothel owners and
police officials to force poor gullible girls into prostitution," an NHRC
statement said.
The commission observed that the contents of the report, if true, portrayed a
dismal picture of abuse of the legal system in connivance with the authorities
supposed to check such exploitation.
It requested the police commissioner to inquire into the matter and submit his
report within four weeks.
