Crackdown on porn surfers in Raipur
December 28, 2004
Raipur - Cyber cafes doubled surfing rates as Chhattisgarh police began a
crackdown on users of pornography websites here.
Several popular cyber cafes were raided in the state capital. Last week police
detained six teenagers in Bhilai, 30 km from here, on charges of watching
pornography sites at a cafe.
While police action in Raipur drew a blank, city SP Ashok Juneja said: "Around
80 major cyber cafes are overcrowded from 5 pm to 9 pm, mainly with teenagers
interested in adult sites. We hope to keep them away from the cafes."
The police department has asked parents to keep an eye on minors and warned of
action under the Information Technology Act of 2000.
Most cyber cafes in Raipur charge Rs 20 an hour. A cafe owner on G E Road
claimed Internet centres are now asking surfers of pornography to pay a bit
more and come late in the night after 10 pm, when the chances of a police raid
are minimal.
