Bazee school-sex video seller is an IIT student
City portal provided address of seller, investigators reach West
Bengal to find geophysics student
December 16, 2004
Mumbai - A meticulous piece of cross-country sleuthing—from Delhi to Mumbai to
West Bengal—into the online sale of a school-sex cellphone video led to the
dramatic Tuesday-evening arrest of a scholar at the Indian Institute of
Technology (IIT), Kharagpur.
Ravi Raj (23), an eighth-semester geophysics student and son of a government
store manager in Jharkhand, was arrested by a Delhi police team at the office
of the IIT’s registrar and charged with sale of obscene material.
‘‘The boy deserves to be arrested,’’ said S K Dube, Director, IIT Kharagpur.
‘‘He has tarnished the image of this institution.’’
The notorious 2.37-minute video clip was shot in October by a Std XII student
of Delhi Public School, R K Puram, Delhi, as he received oral sex from a girl
from his class.
The boy—since expelled with the girl and eight other students—then sold the
clip to his friends. It then made its way onto compact discs being sold on the
streets for Rs 125. One clip wound up for sale on Mumbai-based internet
auctioneers Baazee.com (now owned by online giant eBay).
‘‘When we accessed the server of Baazee.com, we found the address of the seller
as Alice—elec nee Alice Electronics, psell@sify.com, Kharagpur,’’ Prabhakar, a
Deputy Commissioner of Police in Delhi told Newsline.
Registration at Bazee is free and the portal allots a unique ID and password to
each seller.
The portal provided details of the porn clip’s eight buyers, two of whom
revealed they had made online payments through HDFC and ICICI banks.
‘‘The payment is made to Paisapay.com, an allied website of the portal, from
where it is sent to the seller, either online or through a draft,’’ said
Prabhakar.
Investigators found that Rs 17,787.87 had been sent via bank draft to IIT
student Ravi Raj, who had been selling a variety of products—cameras, DVD
player, condoms and more—on the portal.
The address on the drafts turned up Ravi Raj’s hostel room number.
THE LEGAL BLIPS
* Some lawyers say making the clip isn’t illegal, if it is for personal use.
But its transmission via cellphone or the Net is a criminal offence
* The police have invoked Section 67 of the Information and Technology Act for
‘‘publishing or transmission of lascivious material in an electronic f orm’’
and Sections 292 and 294 (sale of obscene material) of the Indian Penal Code
