Pune - If you think that Indians are the most repressed lot when it comes to
discussing matters about sex, think again.
Beverly Whipple, co-author of the international best seller The G Spot says
that she gets the most open questions from people in India and that too from
women in the 35 plus age group.
"I get most open questions in India. Women in the 35 plus age group just grab
me and they ask the most specific and intimate questions", revealed Whipple
during a news conference here on Thursday. And that should mean something since
she has been regularly interacting with people across 80 countries! Whipple was
in town to participate in a presentation on 'Sensuality and sexuality' and
'Kama-Tantra: Prem Mantra' along with R S Sathe at the Tilak Smarak Mandir on
November 27.
Whipple who also attended the recent convention of Asia Pacific Oceanic
Federation of Sexology in Mumbai gave a four day workshop on women's health
issues.
Besides her invention of the G Spot , she is also known for her research of
women with spinal injuries/paralysis, who she says are capable of experiencing
sexual pleasure because of a passage that goes from the genital to the brain.
"We have proved it with the help of functional MRIs and by comparing their
physical response with those of women who did not have such injuries", she
said.
"I want to make it clear that I am not a sex therapist. I am a neuro-physician,
a researcher and a counsellor", she clarified. Answering a question about the
frequently asked questions, Whipple stated that people wanted to have more
information about their bodies, whether what they did was okay.
"I explain to them that there are wide variety of ways to enjoy the sexual
experience. I validate their experiences like having orgasm through imagery",
she added.
Whipple remarked that there were two ways of enjoying sex - goal oriented and
pleasure oriented. "The goal oriented people are not interested in the process
while the pleasure oriented give importance to simple things like hand
holding", she said adding that the pleasure oriented approach was better as it
led to a sensual and pleasurable experience.
Her famous book The G Spot is slated for yet another release in January 2005,
this time as a classic. "I did not change the contents a lot but added more
information about my new research, explain why the G spot is there.", Whipple
said.
She came down heavily on the Bush government's policy of not allowing sex
education in US schools. "Schools enjoying state funding are not allowed to
teach sex education, birth control measures or how to prevent spread of
sexually transmitted diseases, which is deplorable", she remarked.
The US people especially women will have lot more problems because of this, she
said and pointed out that unless you have the knowledge you can not expect
accountable and responsible sexual behaviour.
Whipple stated that the importance of sex education can be gauged from the fact
that 57 per cent pregnancies in the US were unintentional and as many as 8 out
of every 10 pregnancies were not intended. "Women need to be educated in these
matters", she observed.
