Amarinder rues declining female sex-ratio in Punjab
November 24, 2004
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday expressed concern at the
declining gender ratio in the state and said 42 doctors had been prosecuted for
conducting sex-determination tests.
The gender ratio in the state was the lowest in the country and stood at 793
per 1000 men in the age group of 0-6 years, he said on the occasion of Punjab
Day at the India International Trade Fair in New Delhi.
The gender ratio is lowest in Patiala.
Even a ruling by the five Sikh head priests of the Akal Takht -- the highest
temporal seat of the Sikh religion -- against female foeticide, had failed to
check the menace, he said.
The Chief Minister said, "We are taking strict action against those conducting
sex determination tests."
He said he has also written to the Union Health Ministry to make the PNDT Act
more stringent. "But at the moment, in the state, we are concentrating on
creating awareness among the public," he added.
