A sex racket leads police to Bollywood
November 24 2004
Mumbai - It was a perfect foil, say the police.
Rekha Naik posed as a film producer and allegedly lured unsuspecting women into
prostitution. She used the money from the commercial sex racket to finance
C-grade Hindi films, police said.
Naik is the prime suspect in a prostitution racket after the Social Service
Branch of the Mumbai Police arrested three pimps from an Andheri hotel on
Tuesday afternoon.
The police team, led by Senior Inspector Vijay Joshi, sent two bogus customers
to Host Inn, a three-star hotel at Marol naka, and rescued six commercial sex
workers.
According to the police, the girls said they needed money and were lured by
Naik. They were then sent to men after being promised roles in films.
The girls’ statements indicate that Naik was using money from prostitution to
make inroads into Bollywood.
Naik allegedly charged Rs 25,000 for supplying girls.
The police also raided Naik’s plush residence at Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri,
from where she allegedly operated her trade.
A laptop, a diary containing telephone numbers of her customers and Rs 4,500
were recovered from the flat.
Naik, said sources, married a Goa resident. A police team has been sent to Goa
to look for her.
Meanwhile, the girls have been sent for a medical check-up. The pimps have been
identified as Tejal Dina Thakkar (22), Ratilal Singh (28) and Umar Singh Ram
Singh (30).
