Files of Kerala sexual exploitation found missing
November 23, 2004
Kottayam - Crucial files relating to Shari S. Nair, a young unwed mother who
died Nov 13 alleging sexual exploitation by political bigwigs, were found
missing Monday from a case diary submitted by the police in Kerala.
Kottayam Chief Judicial Magistrate P.D. Rajan, while hearing the bail plea of
an accused in the case, discovered that files from two private hospitals and
the Kottayam Medical College relating to Shari were missing.
The 22-year-old died at the Kottayam Medical College following complications
after delivery. She had given birth to a baby girl Aug 15.
Shari's father had Sep 16 approached the Kottayam police and lodged a complaint
that his daughter was being sexually abused by political heavyweights.
Though police have arrested eight people, several people named by the girl are
still to be booked.
Postponing the bail plea hearing of the seventh accused in the case, Soman, the
magistrate asked the public prosecutor to come back with all the files.
Earlier, files pertaining to another sex scandal were found missing from the
office of Women's Commission office at Thiruvananthapuram.
The victim of the case, a 22-year-old woman, had last month alleged that State
Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty had sexually exploited her thrice eight
years ago.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's government has come under fire for the manner in
which his government has handled the two sex scandals.
