'No let up in sex scandal probe'

November 17, 2004

Thiruvananthapuram - Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Tuesday said there would not be any let up in the investigation into the 'Kiliroor sex scandal.'

Talking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, Chandy said government decided to recommend a CBI probe into the scandal following statements from various quarters questioning the credibility of the special police team which was investigating the case.

He wanted Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan to disclose the name of the "VIP" who had visited the sex scandal victim in hospital. The girl had died after a three-month long treatment for post-natal problems at the Medical College Hospital in Kottayam on November 13. Achuthanandan had stated that a doctor had told him that the girl's condition had worsened after the visit of a 'VIP.'

On the question of Industries Minister, P K Kunhalikutty's resigning for his alleged involvement in the Kozhikode 'ice cream parlour' sex case, Chandy said as a Chief minister he can take only legal steps in the matter. Government would not protect anybody in the case and the law would take its own course, he said.

To a question, Chandy said it was for the people to judge whether the UDF government's image had been affected or not following sexual harassment allegations against one of its ministers.
