Kiliroor sex scandal: 'VIP' visit haunts doctor
November 17, 2004
Kottayam - Dr K. Sankaran is a shaken man by the turn of events in the Kiliroor
girl's case. "It pains me that even medical persons are commenting without
going through the treatment records properly," he told this website's
newspaper.
He was reacting to the raging controversy on the exact cause of death of the
girl and the visit of the "VIP" to the private hospital at Thellakom where he
had treated her.
Dr Sankaran, chief surgeon of the hospital and former HOD, surgery, of the
Kottayam MCH, said that he could not explain the treatment given to the girl
since a confidential report had already been handed over to the persons
concerned. "I'm apolitical. The case has become complicated, legal and
political. There was no politics at the time of admission of the girl and two
weeks thereafter. While admitting the girl, what I felt was that an
unfortunate, unwed mother struggling with infection should be saved. I've done
my level best in the nearly two-month- long treatment under my care. Can I ask
whether she was involved in a scandal? he wondered.
On the VIP issue, the doctor said that he was not concerned whether those who
visited the girl were VIPs or not. "I don't remember exactly whether I
mentioned "visitor" or "VIP" to Opposition Leader V.S. Achuthanandan. My
concern was the patient. I wanted to regulate visitors," he said.
He did not remember whether the girl showed signs of distress after the visit
of the CPM-led Democratic Women's Association State general secretary P.K.
Sreemathi MLA along with president M.C. Josephine to the intensive care unit on
October 4. That was followed by the visit of CPM legislature party deputy
leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Giving a political twist and setting rumours of
VIP involvement, V.S. Achuthanandan visited her the next day. The Opposition
Leader had said that the girl's condition had worsened after the visit of a
VIP.
On October 11, CPM State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan saw the girl and said that
what the doctor meant was that the visits of VIPs were posing problems for
treatment and that he hadn't mentioned anyone particularly.
Dr. Sankaran felt that the wrong reports regarding the treatment of the girl
would die down as they were imaginary. However, for him it was a trial by fire,
he said.
