Many Kerala bigwigs in sex scandals

November 1, 2004

Thiruvananthapuram - Fresh allegations of sexual exploitation against a Kerala minister have once again spotlighted the involvement of high profile people in the state in sex scandals.

The latest episode to send shock waves in political circles is allegations by 22-year-old Regina of Kozhikode Thursday that eight years ago she was forced to have sex thrice with P.K. Kunjalikutty, now the industries minister.

When the story first broke in 1996, an investigation conducted by the then government headed by E.K. Nayanar had absolved Kunjalikutty.

But Regina Thursday told newsmen at Kozhikode that she had told a court then that Kunjalikutty had no role because she was given money.

The scandal has come at a time when the Kerala Police are investigating another case of the sexual exploitation of a minor girl at Killiroor near Kottayam.

There have been reports on the involvement of big political names in the case.

While six people, including two women, have been arrested, the victim is in a serious condition after developing complications while giving birth to a baby girl.

There are several other shocking incidents too, involving big names.

For instance, cases of immoral trafficking against a senior excise official and a leading textile dealer, who were taken into custody when they were caught in the act with two college girls this month.

Another case that has caught media attention is the conviction by a lower court last month of former minister and senior opposition legislator M. Neelalohithadasan Nadar in a sexual abuse case filed by a woman forest official. Nadar, however, has managed to get a stay on it.

But trial is nearing completion on a similar case against Nadar, filed by senior bureaucrat Nalini Netto.

Reacting to the Nadar episode, Kerala Assembly Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan said there was no legal bar on Nadar continuing as legislator.

"But politicians getting involved in such cases is not good," said Ramakrishnan.

All eyes are now on Chief Minister Oommen Chandy who has time and again said all those involved in criminal acts will be brought to book.
