Porn and software seized in New Delhi

New Delhi - The fact that Delhi has become a hotbed of pirated software has
only been authenticated with the seizure of pornographic CDs, VCDs and DVDs
worth more than Rs 3.5 crore in the last few days.
The seizure was made in several raids which were carried out by the economic
offences wing (EOW) of Delhi Police at places all over the city including
Palika Bazaar, which is now widely acknowledged as the den of pirated software.
On October 25, a raid was conducted at two shops in Jahangirpuri in west Delhi
from where 873 pirated VCDs, 495 MP3s, 8 CD writers, 1,200 inlay cards and 50
blank CDs were seized. The two shop owners have been arrested.
"In another raid at Palika Bazar on Wednesday, the cops seized 679 pirated DVDs
of English and Hindi movies and 17 pornographic VCDs from a shop. Around 200
pornographic VCDs were seized from another shop in the market," said deputy
commissioner of police (EOW) Prabhakar.
Software like Windows XP in a double CD set were also available with these
shops. These were sold at prices ranging from Rs 70 to even Rs 1,000 depending
upon the appearance of the customers.
However, it's the pornographic VCDs and DVDs which are proving to be the
biggest menace. A record number of more than 10,000 pornographic VCDs and DVDs
have been seized this year. More than 30 people have been arrested for selling
the software.
The biggest catch for the cops, in fact, this year has been 26-year-old Raees
Khan who is now widely acknowledged as the numero uno software pirate in Delhi.
According to the police, Khan has his contacts in Dubai and Singapore from whom
he procures the DVDs and VCDs. "He was arrested from near Jama Masjid last
week. About 50 CD writers were seized from him. He was virtually running the
entire operation single-handedly in Delhi," said a police officer.
According to the police, most of these pirated stuff is manufactured in Dubai
and routed to various cities in India through Nepal. "Apart from that, many of
these pirated VCDs and DVDs find their way to India through the port in
Kolkata," said a police officer.
