Porn on phone catching on in India
October 20, 2004
Chennai - Sleaze through cellphone is in and it is catching on fast in the
city. If you are really keen and you possess a high-end instrument, you can
watch blue films on your mobile set. Understandably, the new development has
left the cyber cops jittery.
While the arrest of a youth for uploading short pornographic clips on
cellphones early this month blew the lid off the crime, it now appears that it
is far bigger a menace than it initially believed to be. With memory sticks
with capacities touching one GB (Giga-Byte) coming into the market, it is
rather easy to transfer full-length movies through mobile phones for as little
as Rs 200.
"With a 256 MB (Mega Byte) memory stick, which costs about Rs 4000, it is not
uncommon for youths with high-end mobile phones to go in for these accessories.
And loading a full-length movie, pirated or pornography, is not a big deal at
all," said a vendor in electronic items.
The police believe that the crime is still in its nascent stages and they can
nip it in the bud.
"Though policing the entire Internet is impossible, if we come to know of such
activities, we will come down hard on the criminals. But if these activities
are to be curbed, more people should come forward and give information," said R
Nataraj, Commissioner of Police, Chennai.
Last week's arrest has been the biggest catch so far for the Cyber Crime Cell
of the city police which investigates into these matters. Santosh, the accused,
had downloaded pornography from the Net and uploaded it on to the phones of
those willing to pay Rs 100 for a five-minute clip. This he did by using either
a data cable or using IR.
"Since this was a show of obscenity in electronic form, we had booked him under
Section 67 of the IT Act. But with new models coming in at regular intervals,
such offences are bound to increase," said Balu, Assistant Commissioner of
Police, Cyber Crime Cell.
With IR and Blue Tooth (A technology that enables wireless communication within
a range of 10 metres) becoming standard features in mobile phones these days,
sharing data has also become easier. "I can now take short video clips and
using a software combine them into one long video clip and send it anybody in a
matter of minutes," said Vanaathi Rayan, a software professional from Bangalore
who buys high-end mobile phones the moment they hit the market.
What is sheer fun for people like Rayan is business for smart cyber criminals.
"Such acts can spur youngsters into committing far more serious sexual
offences," said a police officer referring to the suicide of a college girl
three years ago after obscene pictures of her appeared on the Internet.
If it was the Internet then, now it is the cellphone that is the tool used by
those bent on making a fast buck.
"we are told that shooting revealing pictures of girls in public without their
knowledge and passing them around is catching on in Chennai. We will crackdown
on such people also," said a senior officer adding that the judiciary should
also see these offences as damning and come down hard on the offenders. He was
referring to the fact that Santosh was released on bail barely a week after he
was arrested.
