What men want: Straight, stereotypical sex

September 15, 2004

New Delhi - Most Indian men, keeping alive old stereotypes, have sex only at night in their bedrooms and believe having sex with their wives is their marital right, a survey has revealed.

Most importantly, a majority 56 per cent of survey respondents said they were happy with their sex lives.

Around 59 per cent of respondents in a survey done by the India Today magazine, AC Nielsen and ORG-MARG said they prefer having sex after sundown and in their beds.

An overwhelming majority, 89 per cent, said sex was important in their lives in the survey conducted by talking to men between the ages of 18 and 55 years across 11 cities.

Around 80 per cent of the respondents said sex is their matrimonial right and man on top is the favourite position for 47 per cent, according to the survey.

The survey brings out several contradictions in India, the land of the Kamasutra but where sex is still not openly discussed.

For instance, only 24 per cent said that they feared their partner's disloyalty in a relationship, but 39 per cent said they were "extremely" or "reasonably" possessive about their partner.

Most men, about 71 per cent, said it was unacceptable for their partners to have fantasies about other men while making love.

Around 37 per cent said they have sex more than once a week, while 30 per cent have multiple orgasms.

Among the other revelations of the survey are that 40 per cent of Indian men are sometimes bored with sex in their marriage, 45 per cent first had intercourse on their nuptial night, 63 per cent had never paid for sex, 73 per cent never had homosexual experience and 67 per cent never had extramarital sex.

But if they were to have extramarital sex, 45 per cent would prefer someone younger than them, while 42 per cent say that they've had "a few" sexual partners outside marriage.

In variety of experiences, men from the smaller towns and countryside scored ahead of their city cousins in the survey.

In Chandigarh, for instance, 80 per cent men felt that women confused sex with commitment, while 67 per cent of the men from Jaipur said they preferred long foreplay.

Ahmedabad, which is supposed to be conservative, scored the highest as India's most sexual city, with 69 per cent saying that they are very happy with their sex lives and 59 per cent claiming that oral sex was very important for them.

Most men from Ahmedabad, around 88 per cent, said they always make sure that their partner has an orgasm and an equal number agree that both men and women should have the same amount of pleasure.

Last year, when India Today did a similar survey with women, Ahmedabad had topped the charts with most respondents giving sex 4 in an importance scale of five in their lives. The national average was 3.5.

In a sign of changing times, 39 per cent of the respondents said they always have an orgasm and 40 per cent said they always make sure that their partner has one too.

In a country increasingly affected by AIDS, a healthy sign is that 38 per cent said that a condom is a must-use.
