Inquiry ordered into sexual abuse of children
September 7, 2004
Panaji - A day after police announced setting up of a child and women
protection unit, Goa's Director General of Police (DGP) Amod Kanth on Tuesday
ordered an inquiry into the alleged sexual abuse of four children while in
custody by the policemen.
"I have set up an inquiry into the incident but I do not think that sexual
abuse occurred within the police station. There may have been some lapses on
the part of the police and we are looking into the entire matter", the DGP said
here.
Assuring that if a police officer was found "even marginally guilty" he would
not be spared, Kanth said "the children were arrested in a matter of attempted
theft on Sunday. They were medically examined and then produced before a
juvenile justice board magistrate for remand."
If the children had been abused, they could have had a chance to say so before
the magistrate, which it appears they have not done, Kanth added.
Some local dailies had carried news that Vasco police had allegedly stripped
and sexually abused four boys, one of whom was physically handicapped, but
Kanth said he was appalled that a newspaper could carry a story without knowing
the facts.
On Monday, the Goa police had announced setting up of women and child
protection unit in cooperation with NGOs and government organisations, which
would include a 24-hour women's police station and a round the clock helpline.
