Pay Rs 10 for sexual harassment
August 26, 2004
New Delhi - Professors of Delhi University will now have to pay for "sexual
harassment".
Or so it would seem from their new payslips. Some teachers were nonplussed,
while others merely laughed it off as their July payslips showed a deduction of
10 rupees under the heading "sexual harassment".
Few knew what the strange deduction was for.
"It must be to aid the new committee against sexual harassment set up at the
university," said Jaswinder Singh, secretary of the Delhi University Teachers'
Association.
"I personally am yet to see the payslip, but I think the term is obnoxious. I
don't think these deductions will last more than this one year, although I do
agree that sexual harassment is a very serious issue," he added.
A Prevention of Sexual Harassment Committee was formed in December last year to
address the growing number of sexual harassment cases cropping up in colleges.
Complaint centres had been set up by the Women's Studies and Development Centre
in 26 colleges. The money deducted from teachers would go into partially
funding the work of the committee.
"I know it sounds funny but the committee name was too long to mention
completely," Malashri Lal, secretary of the committee, told IANS.
Lal says, "The university will be providing funds for the centres. And Rs 10
will also be collected as contribution from all the employees once a year. It
is a very small sum, but the act brings involvement from all the employees for
the cause."
