Doctor surrenders in sexual harassment case

JULY 29, 2004

Kolkata - Medical circles in Kolkata have been plunged into a row over a sexual harassment case.

J. Mazumdar, superintendent of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, surrendered at the Alipore Court on Monday after he was charged with 'outrage of modesty' and 'criminal intimidation'. He was granted bail.

An anaesthesiologist at CNCI had accused Mazumdar of sexual harassment and had filed a complaint with the Gariahat police station on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the detective department, following instructions from the state government, took over the investigation.

"We have spoken to the victim and will also question the accused," said Peeyush Pande, DC (DD-I). Since early morning, Majumdar was seen waiting at the Alipore SDJM court to surrender. The formalities were completed later in the afternoon and the next hearing has been slated for November 30.

"I am being framed. I have tried to stop corruption at the institute and this is a motivated attack by people whose interests have been hurt," Majumdar said.

The anaesthesiologist, who had lodged the complaint, resumed her duties from Wednesday. Although she refused to comment, family sources said that she was resolved to fight the case till the end. "The incident has saddened her but she has decided to go ahead with the case," said a family member.

The woman has alleged in the police complaint that she had been threatened several times by the superintendent and the harassment has continued for five years. Earlier, a nurse and a junior doctor had complained of harassment.

The medical fraternity is now divided over the issue. The Indian Medical Association (Calcutta), of which Majumdar is a member, has come out in his defence.

"Majumdar is being falsely implicated. He is known as a strict administrator and has taken several steps to stop corruption. These are attempts to tarnish his reputation," said RD Dubey, a senior IMA official.

Secretary of association of health services doctors Gautam Mukhopadhyay said, "There has to be thorough investigation as it is a very serious allegation." However, national president of IMA Sudipto Roy (now in Madurai) refused to comment, saying that he did not have the details.
