Local girls wind up in Kampala bars

Mumbai - They were sold a dream of performing in Malaysia. Instead, they landed
up at the dance bars in Uganda.
The story of five girls from Jogeshwari has exposed an international syndicate
running sex rackets across Asia and Africa.
The racket came to light when these beleaguered girls returned to Mumbai from
Uganda on Monday and lodged a complaint with the Oshiwara police.
On Wednesday, the police arrested Vicky Singh alias Kapil and his associates
Ashish Singh and Sushant Sarkar alias Babu Bengali. Two others, Sunil Singh and
Nilesh, have also been named as members of the syndicate.
The girls, whose names have been withheld, were lured into a trap when they
enlisted to take part as dancers in stage shows under the banner of Event
Organisers, a Lokhandwala-based company.
They were selected from reputed bars across the city by Sunil Singh and Nilesh.
They were even interviewed by the three so-called organisers in February and
told that they had to perform in Malaysia.
The organisers even managed to obtain passports and visas for the girls. They
were then asked to buy new dresses and prepare for the journey to Kuala Lumpur.
But they were in for a rude shock when they found themselves offloaded at
Kampala airport in Uganda in early April.
Initially, the girls were asked to dance in bars. Later, they were asked to
entertain personal guests in isolated rooms. Worse still, they were given
mobile phone numbers and asked to contact clients.
The girls were also regularly assaulted when they resisted Vicky Singh.
Finally, police were alerted when one of the girls consumed bleach and was
admitted to a hospital in Kampala.
They were immediately sent on separate flights to Mumbai, where they lodged a
complaint at the local police station.
Senior Inspector S M Bhumkar, Oshiwara police, confirmed the sex racket but
refused to offer details.
