BSF chief says laws too weak to curtail human trafficking
July 26, 2004
New Delhi - Stringent laws to curb human trafficking across India-Bangladesh
border should be put in place, the BSF chief Ajay Sharma said on Saturday.
Ajay Raj Sharma told reporters here that a re-look into existing laws was
required to make them more effective.
"The existing laws to keep a check on these things requires change. All the
existing laws should be re-examined and should be made more effective.
Specially for touts and traffickers there should be separate laws so that they
can be punished and the crime could be prevented," Sharma said.
Sharma said he had discussed the issue with the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) chief
when he visited Dhaka early this year.
Sharma also proposed formation of vigilance committee at village level to check
the crime."A village vigilance committee should be formed, the villagers should
be educated, motivated so that they can give timely information to West Bengal
Police and to BSF. And then we can nab such groups there only, " Sharma said.
