Rape charge: Model comes out in the open

July 23, 2004

Mumbai - The allegations are serious: Rape and threatening to kill. That’s the police complaint, Preeti Jain (24), a model and a small-time actress lodged against Bollywood director, Madhur Bhandarkar, yesterday.

“I had come to Mumbai to enter films five years ago. Obviously, the crime is so gruesome that I had to come out in the open and file such a heinous charge,” said Jain. She said that she had been involved in a long-term relationship with Bhandarkar. But on the pretext of marriage and roles in his films, he had taken advantage of her and raped her.

Preeti further said that in the last couple of months, when she realised that Bhandarkar was not keeping his promise, she’d tried to distance herself from the relationship. But he threatened to kill her and her family, if she did not comply with his wishes.

Bhandarkar has termed Jain’s charges as a publicity stunt.

Sources from the film industry agree. “Bhandarkar had known Jain since 1999. He had promised her a movie career, besides marriage.

Neither worked out as Bhandarkar got married earlier this year to his longtime girlfriend, Renu Namboodiri, and did not cast Jain in his next film, Page Three. So, the peeved starlet went ahead and filed rape charges against the director.”

According to the police Jain had come to Mumbai in 1999 from Delhi and came in contact with Bhandarkar some time earlier this year. Police sources said that the accused would be approaching the sessions court for an anticipatory bail before coming in for questioning.

Madhur Bhandarkar has directed Bollywood movies like Chandni Bar, and the recently released Aan – Men at Work

Who is Preeti Jain?
“I was born in Cairo, but have lived in Paris, London and even Karachi,” says Preeti Jain, a 24-something beauty, who came to Mumbai five years ago from Delhi, to make it big in the film industry. In these five years, she did the rounds of several producers’ offices.

Besides a couple of B-grade film producers, Saawan Kumar Tak admitted he had met her in the past. She had also made minor appearances in films like Bhandarkar’s critically acclaimed, Chandni Bar and Satta and lesser known music videos and commercials.

She was set to debut as the leading lady in the relatively unpublicised film Sab Kuchh, directed by the prolific B R Ishara, due to release shortly.

She is a resident of Ganga Jamuna Society, Yari Road, Versova, and lives with her father. Her mother expired a few years ago.
