Kuwait: Billiard hall hostesses held

December 22, 2005

Kuwait City - The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor in coordination with police and under the supervision of Hamad Al-Madhadhi, Assistant Undersecretary of the Labor Affairs at the ministry have arrested 36 Asian women working for billiard halls in Mangaf and Fintas in violation of residence laws, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Several residents of the area have expressed joy at the arrests of the women, who they say lure the youth into illegal activities.

Asian women are trafficked into the country, usually under the guise of working as maids, are often forced into prostitution to cater to the desires of local men. Other Asian woman working as maids learn of these opportunities to earn extra money to augment their meager wages.

Local men in this conservative Muslim nation often seek out foreign sex workers to avoid conflicting with Islamic ideals of sex with Muslim women.

Head of the inspection teams, Jalal Al-Kout said a total of 180 expatriate women and 10 men were arrested from 79 billiard halls.

Most of them were holding Visa No. 20 which means they are domestic servants and cannot work in offices and establishments.

Despite the illegality of prostitution in Kuwait and other predominently Muslim nations, men are rarely prosecuted for their involvement in the sex trade either as customers or traffickers.

No men were reported arrested in this case.
