Abu Dhabi - Federal health authorities in the United Arab Emirates have foiled several attempts to smuggle thousands of medical products, including sexual stimulants, at one of the country's entry points, said a senior health official.

The authorities confiscated the items which they say could have fatal side-effects. The seizure took place at one of Abu Dhabi's land entry points, the official told Khaleej Times.

"The seized products include 4,140 pieces of female and male intimate solutions and gel. More than 5,000 fitness tablets were also among the confiscated items," said the official. "According to our statistics, 1,440 pieces of feminine intimate solution, namely Lady A. Vergin solution, and 2,400 pieces of Men's sexual gel, were seized by the authorities. Three hundred other pieces of sex stimulators of unknown compositions were also appropriated," said the official. There were also 5,760 'fitting tablets' (sexual stimulants) among the seized products. The confiscated items are not registered in the country and it is not permissible to market them in the UAE, said the official.

"These items do not comply with the conditions of registration in the country. Their compositions are vague to us. They might contain fatal substances that cause severe infections. They probably include sex stimulators, which could be life-threatening to a large segment of the society, as they were not subject to laboratory analysis conducted by the Central Drug Control Department," said the official.

The medical products, said the official, were definitely unsafe and their potential risk is very high. "These kind of products, known as general sale products, are not subject to pricing regulations set by the ministry. This emphasises that the items were dangerous and pose health hazards. Manufacturers are also not known to us. How and where these items were stored and what are the storage conditions were also obscure."

The official underlined that the ministry has adopted more stringent measures to curb smuggling of medical products as well as drugs into the country that do not comply with registration and laboratory analysis conditions set by the ministry to protect public health.
