Porn lands prisoner in hot water
Can an Orthodox Jew read porn magazines?

The Tel Aviv District Court was called to task on that exact question Tuesday
by prisoner Guy Hamel petitioning against a Prisons Service decision to take
away his Badatz-certified kosher food after finding porn magazines and videos
in his cell.
Hamel, a resident of the settlement of Itamar, was sentenced to life in prison
in 2000 for the nationalistic murder of a 68-year-old Palestinian olive picker.
On Tuesday, he petitioned the court after a Prisons Service board revoked his
right to receive Badatz-certified kosher food in prison.
Prisons Service officials said that Badatz food, which costs double the price
than regular prison food, is only given to inmates who prove they lead a
strictly religious lifestyle. In Hamel's case, they said, the porn material
found in his cell was "hardcore" and is a clear indication he is not of a
religious level which demands the state pay extra money for his food.
"We found a magazine that can only be described as hardcore porn and the best
part was a video of a rabbi giving a lecture which in the middle turned into a
porn movie," one Prisons Service official said.
Hamel has reportedly apologized for the porn material claiming it "was a
one-time mistake" which he promised will never happen again.
Hammel added that he knew of another prisoner in whose cell guards found
pornographic material, but his strictly kosher meals were not taken away from
him.
