Sex assault circulated on cellphones
July 23, 2004
Riyadh - Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz demanded on Thursday that
investigators quickly resolve the case of a teenage girl who was sexually
assaulted in the kingdom's capital, informed sources said.
"Prince Abdullah demanded that the truth of the case of sexual assault be
revealed and those found guilty will be punished accordingly," said the sources
who asked not to be named.
Footage of a sexual assault of a teenage girl which was circulated on camera
phones in Saudi Arabia last week outraged Saudi citizens.
The footage shows a Nigerian man raping the girl while two Saudi men scream
insults at her. The 16-year-old girl, whose father is from a prominent Gulf
country, is seen shouting to one of the Saudi men for help.
The three men have been in police custody for more than a week.
The sources said the men were being held in a Riyadh prison and that Riyadh
governor Prince Salman bin Abdel Aziz was following up the case personally.
Girl appeals for help
"The case will be referred to the Islamic law following investigation. The
three men will receive the harshest punishment if charges prove true," the
sources said.
Saudi Islamic law imposes the death penalty for rape.
The mobile camera footage shows the Nigerian man raping the girl, who screams
out the name "Birjis" and appeals for his help.
The sources identified the two Saudis as Birjis al-Dousari and Abdel Rahman
al-Qahtani. The Nigerian, who works as a driver for one of the Saudis, is only
identified as Youssef.
Mobile cameras are prohibited in the Saudi kingdom, which follows the strict
Wahabbi version of Islam.
In very conservative Saudi society, such cases are rarely reported from the
kingdom - let alone being referred to by the country's leader.
