Interior Minister Avraham Poraz said Monday that he would advance a move to
grant work and visitor permits for up to two years for women who are victims of
sex trade trafficking who testify against their traffickers.
Poraz said the measure is aimed at encouraging the women to testify. The extra
permit would be granted for one year initially, with another year at the
conclusion of the trial. He made the announcement during a hearing of the
Knesset Inquiry into Women Trafficking on the phenomenon of the women going
back to work as prostitutes because they don't get permits. At present, there
are only two women in a Tel Aviv shelter established to protect the victims.
Another nine escaped for economic reasons.
In the recent US State Department Report on Trafficking in Persons, Israel was
cited for its failure to make progress in giving assistance to victims.
