Prosecutors aim at sex offenders in Korea

February 27, 2006

The Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office announced yesterday that sex offences against minors would be investigated under detention. The prosecutors also said that they would request judges give probation if the accused sex offender received a suspended sentence.

The boundaries of everyday activities under probation would be limited, including a possibility of house arrest and irregular visits by supervisory police officers. Any planned trip or change of residence must be reported to the officer.

Suspects will also undergo psychological testing while under investigation. To protect under-age victims, prosecutor's offices nationwide have been ordered to use an investigation room for minors only and to assign female officers to such investigations.

A meeting between the government and the Uri Party is planned, in which a DNA databank of convicted sex offenders is to be discussed.

Seoul District Court has announced that sex crimes against children and adolescents will be heavily punished. Uijeongbu District Court said it will regard such crimes as equal to drug or gang-related crimes, resulting in prison sentences.

The Taegu District Court last May sentenced a 50-year-old who confined a 12-year-old girl in his home for 30 hours and raped her repeatedly to a 15-year prison term. At the time, the court said the man's crime went against the morals of society.

The above three courts have said they will provide immediate warrants for arrest in suspected sex crimes.

In addition, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family has said it will push for sex offenders to be given prison sentences.
