Korea: Most working women suffer sexual harassment

December 22, 2005

More than half of Korea's working women have experienced sexual harassment at social gatherings with colleagues, an unrepresentative survey suggests. Some men were also sexually harassed, according to the survey.

The poll of 231 working women conducted by job portal Saramin found that 54.1 percent of respondents experienced sexual harassment when they got together with colleagues after work. In a survey of 215 working men, 17.2 percent of respondents gave the same answer.

Unwanted approaches are the most frequent type of sexual harassment (50.6 percent,) followed by sexual jokes (22.8 percent) and derogatory remarks on appearance (12.3 percent.) Superiors were the culprits in 84 percent of cases.

However, only four culprits (2.5 percent) were disciplined, suggesting a lack of mechanisms to tackle sexual harassment at work. Only 14.6 percent of companies have a department or staff in charge of dealing with sexual harassment and 24.7 percent carry out preventive education programs on the issue.
