Sex and money still mark student gender divide in Korea

July 8, 2005

When university students hook up, the men tend to worry about money and the women about different attitudes to sex, a survey suggests.

The student counseling center of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies said Tuesday a survey on sexual understanding given to 914 incoming students - 374 men and 540 women - between February 28 and March 12 showed that 30 percent of male students worry most about money when they find girlfriends among their fellow students.

Most women worry attitudes to sex, and it seems with good reason. Asked how much physical contact they would permit when interacting with their significant other, 35.9 percent of male students said if they loved their partner, they were prepared to go all the way, compared to only 7.7 percent of female students.

Instead, 61.1 percent of female students responded that they might tolerate a kiss or some light cuddling. Ten students (1.9 percent) said they would permit no physical contact of any kind.

A 26-year-old male political science student at the university commented, "They say people have become much more open about sex, but it seems the openness is still proceeding faster among men. Nevertheless, when you look at how women have grown more receptive to physical contact, it seems they have changed a lot from the past."
