Plan sees sex hotels as modest lodgings

November 24, 2004

The government has an innovative plan to increase the supply of low-priced hotels in Korea for Southeast Asian and Chinese tourists.

Minister of Culture and Tourism Chung Dong-chae said yesterday that so-called love hotels ? which offer rooms by the hour for sexual purposes ? could be upgraded to create a standard for thrifty hotel chains.

He was speaking at a press conference hosted by the Korea Tourism Association held at the Westin Chosun Hotel in downtown Seoul.

"To attract tourists from China, we have to expand hotels in the middle price range, that is, between 80,000 won ($75) and 100,000 won," Mr. Chung said. "Recently many foreign investors have shown an interest in Korea's tourism industry ? but we have to have the facilities," he added.
