Thousands of men arrested on new prostitution law
October 22, 2004
Police said Friday that a total of 4,365 people have been arrested or booked
for investigation after the special anti-prostitution law took effective on
Sept. 23. Among those were 849 brothel owners, 660 prostitutes and 2,352 johns.
Police said that the johns were mostly married men in their 30s and 40s,
accounting for 63 percent (1,389) of those arrested -- disproving the argument
that the sex trade is a necessary evil for single men.
By age, men in their 30s accounted for the highest number with 996, or 45
percent, followed by men in their 20s with 31 percent and men in their 40s with
18 percent. By occupation, office workers were at the top with 902, or 41
percent, followed by self-employed with 435, or 20 percent and jobless men with
321, or 15 percent.
The police arrested 62 johns, issued arrest warrants for 19 others and booked
2,271 without physical detention. As for brothel owners, the police arrested
100, issued arrest warrants for 93 and booked 656 without physical detention.
The family court will order the men to do community service or take some
education courses according to their offence, one to six months later.
