Sex traders protests police crackdown
By Moon Gwang-lip

Massive crackdowns on prostitution have drawn a strong backlash from brothel
owners and prostitutes around the nation.
Representatives of red-light districts around the country said Friday they will
continue to hold rallies to demand police stop their campaign against the sex
trade, which was launched Thursday as a new special anti-prostitution law took
effect.
Hundreds of brothel owners and their employees in Seoul and other cities took
to the street urging the government to guarantee their livelihood on the first
day of the special clampdown.
Some 300 people engaging in the sex trade industry in Miari, Seoul, held a
90-minute protest rally.
``The action by law enforcement authorities is threatening our survival. We
want the government to stop this campaign against our profession,’’ they said
on the rally.
``We’re angry about this declared crusade against us. We’ll continue our
protest after the Chusok holiday to ensure our livelihood,’’ said a member of a
nationwide association of brothel owners called Hanter.
The Pusan-based Hanter opened in 2002 with membership from brothel owners
nationwide, including those in Miari and Chungnyangni of Seoul, Bomchon and
Haeundai of Pusan, and Chagalmadang in Taegu.
He said prostitutes would also join the protest against the clampdown.
``The new law calls for the shutdown of whorehouses by 2007, but the government
is trying to wipe them out without making any alternatives for our job
security,’’ the brothel operator said.
He said many sex service providers will have no other choice but to become more
stealthy and use more sophisticated methods to avoid police detection.
