Lawyers launch battle against sex trade
May 19, 2004
Korean lawyers on Wednesday launched a crusade against brothel owners and other
entertainment facilities providing sexual services to their clients in a
desperate effort to protect sex trade victims. The Korean Bar Association (KBA)
filed five damage lawsuits against sex traders to demand compensation for nine
victims who were forced into prostitution.
"We’ve started a legal battle against brothel owners and other sex traders in
order to prevent the abuse of human rights of their victims," Park Young-lip,
head of the KBA’s human rights committee, said during a news conference right
after filing the suits with a Seoul Court.
"Even though we have received over 80 reports related to the sex industry, many
other victims are quite reluctant to contact us and other authorities," he
said.
"We are determined to change people’s distorted attitudes towards the sex
industry," he added.
According to the KBA, sex trade victims are mired in snowballing debts owed to
their employers, who demand large sums of money.
The litigations had been prepared by the KBA since June 2003. The lawyers’
group also vowed to file more damage suits on behalf of those sexually
exploited.
The KBA also pledged to enhance public awareness about the sex trade in
cooperation with police and government agencies, including the Justice Ministry
and the Ministry of Gender Equality.
