The word "sex" garnered the highest price in an auction of 1,500 keywords used
to connect directly to a company’s Website when entered into major search
engines, a local Internet domain company said yesterday.
Netpia, which provides Hangul or Korean letter-based domain service, said the
Korean word sex, was auctioned off for 51 million won. The purchase surpasses
the record, set by an ophthalmologist who bought "rasik," or eye operation, for
31 million won during an auction last week, Netpia officials said.
The company declined to identify the successful bidder, only saying he is
involved in a related business.
Typing keywords in Hangul in major search engines, such as Yahoo! and Lycos,
users can be automatically linked to Websites without having to type an
address.
The English keyword "sex" was previously sold at the price of 620 million won,
but a successful bidder failed to pay, the officials said.
The company asked all bidders to make a deposit in advance in order to prevent
the recurrence of such an event, the officials said.
"Pudongsan," or real estate, earned the second-highest price of 26 million won
in the auction. Profits made from the auctions will be used for social welfare
funds, the company said.
