Japan: Human trafficking victims to get special residency status
January 19, 2005
Tokyo — Japan will grant victims of human trafficking special residency status
if they are found to have overstayed their visas and will accelerate measures
to crack down on human traffickers, government officials said Tuesday.
The decision to give such consideration and enforce stronger measures will be
stipulated in state-proposed revisions to the Immigration Control and Refugee
Recognition Law. The government plans to submit a bill to amend the law to that
end during the ordinary Diet session to convene Friday.
Japan would like to get its name off the human-trafficking watch list put out
by the United States last June. Japan was listed as a destination for Asian and
Latin American women trafficked for forced labor and sexual exploitation. The
report called for improved preventative measures.
