Koizumi supports tracking the address of convicted sexual offenders
January 12, 2005
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said on Tuesday that police departments should
track the whereabouts of sexual offenders after they are released from prison.
The idea came to light after a 36-year-old convicted sexual offender kidnapped
a 7-year-old girl in Nara Prefecture and apparently killed her.
"This is necessary," Koizumi said, when he talked about a comment made by the
head of the National Police Agency (NPA). "It's going too far to say that the
general public should be informed of the address of former sexual offenders,
but I think police should know such information," said Koizumi.
The chief of the NPA recently said that an information system should be
established for police to track the address of former sexual offenders. But
Justice Minister Chieko Minamino has shown a cautious stance in consideration
of the privacy of former sexual offenders.
