Sexual harassment common in Japan's public education
October 19, 2004
Almost one in every 10 women working in the public education sector in Akita
Prefecture has reported being a victim of workplace sexual harassment, a
shocking survey has showed.
Of the 5,072 women working for the prefectural board of education or teaching
at a public school in the prefecture, 413 claim to have been sexually harassed
at some stage of their career.
"We will reaffirm to officials that there are places they can go to for help
while at the same time try to instill an awareness that the acts or words some
people may think nothing of could actually be construed by others as being
sexual harassment," a prefectural board of education spokesman said.
Most common complaints involved being probed about their figure, marital
status, age or pregnancy.
Others reported being forced to listen to sexual jokes or innuendo, while 131
reported being felt up.
Bosses were the perpetrators of 61.3 percent of the sexual harassment cases the
women reported.
Effects reported as a result of being sexually harassed included feeling
stressed, sudden insomnia and a desire to transfer to a different workplace.
