Yamagata University academic quits over sexual harassment of student
September 20, 2004
Yamagata - A 60-something Yamagata University professor has resigned after
being suspended for sexually harassing one of his female students, college
officials said.
The professor was judged to have harassed the young woman by acting
suggestively and talking his way into a hotel room when they went on a trip for
an academic society meeting.
He resigned immediately after being handed a two-month suspension, officials of
the university said Friday.
"We fear that discussing in detail the acts that occurred and releasing the
name of the academic in question would in turn reveal the identity of the woman
involved in the case, so would prefer not to comment," Yamagata University
President Fujio Sendo said.
School officials said the incident at the center of the suspension occurred in
September 2001, but the woman only complained in May of this year.
An investigation into her claims determined the professor had sexually harassed
her. Officials did reveal that the professor and student had traveled together
outside of Yamagata Prefecture.
They had been drinking and the professor talked his way into her hotel room by
offering to hear the woman practice a speech she was due to give the academic
society meeting.
Officials suggested the professor acted and spoke in a sexual manner, but did
not offer any further clarification of the statement.
