Girls let Mr. Right come straight in the box
By Ryann Connell
August 18, 2004
Gyaku Nanpaya, establishments set up exclusively for women to come in and
select men waiting for them in little booths, have started to flourish in Tokyo
entertainment districts like Shinjuku, Shibuya and Ikebukuro, according to
Shukan Post.
"Women take a look at a guy's profile and, if they like what they see, they go
into a small room and meet him. Gyaku Nanpaya are most appealing because they
let you actually see and talk to the women before deciding whether to do
anything," a Gyaku Nanpaya regular tells Shukan Post. "Then, if there's a
mutual liking displayed, you're both free to do whatever you like, so it's a
lot safer than meeting up with somebody you first came in contact with online."
A reporter from Japan's best-selling weekly tries out one of the Gyaku Nanpaya
in Shinjuku rumored to attract more women than most.
Entrance requires presentation of some form of ID, a 5,000 yen registration
charge and payment of 4,000 yen per hour for use of a room.
Customers fill out a profile listing their name (nicknames are fine), their
reason for coming to the Gyaku Nanpaya and a description of their ideal type of
woman.
Club walls are adorned with dozens of resumes from guys ranging in age from
their 20s to their 50s and diverse professions.
Formalities finished, the customer enters a room about 10-meters square
containing only a television and a box of tissues placed atop a small coffee
table and waits. Shukan Post's reporter was greeted by a buxom woman who said
she was a 27-year-old clerk from one of the nearby department stores.
After some 20 minutes of small talk, the woman gladly accepted an invitation to
dinner at a pub, where she gladly spoke of her roughly twice weekly trips to
the Gyaku Nanpaya.
"So far, I've gone straight to a hotel three times. Each time was with a much
older guy. Older men are kinder than younger guys and they've got more
experience," she tells Shukan Post.
Eventually, despite the hopes of an exchange of bodily fluids, the reporter has
to be content with just a phone number, but other men using Gyaku Nanpaya
readily attest to the helping hand they give those playing the love game.
"You often hear of people going straight from the room (at the Gyaku Nanpaya)
to a love hotel. Still, in the room there's always the added thrill of playing
around while you're also trying to stifle any noise you make so others don't
know what you're doing," another regular tells Shukan Post. "Weekday afternoons
are good, too, because there're surprisingly lots of housewives looking for
romantic encounters on the prowl. I recommend the clubs."
